Ed Lane, his son, had little production expertise and was 21 at the time. Ed was motivated by his dad to try his hand at beginning a chest factory in the recently acquired plant. The Lanes did not understand how successful their new enterprise was going to be, so, they did not start out placing their name on it. Rather, they incorporated the small business as the Standard Red Cedar Chest Firm, with Ed Lane as Vice President and General Manager and John Lane as President. From cedar chests, Lane enlarged to case goods in 1956, occasional tables in 1951, and accent pieces in 1965.
